Lonny Fair 2011

The Totara team organised a fundraiser to raise money for a little girl living in Malawi.

Her name is Lonny. she lives in a small village in Africa. She is 5 years old.

Her village school doesn't have enough books and things to learn. She also doesn't have clean water and good food.

We wanted to raise money and send it to her to help out her family and village.

Room 4 brought along lots of packets that we used to make a "pick a Packet game.

We put numbers on all the packets of things we had collected and then got milk bottle tops and put numbers on them too.

We collected over 200 packets.

On Friday, the whole school stopped and we had a Lonny fair. There were lots of different activities.

At our "Pick-a-Packet" game, the children paid $1 to pick a number and then they won the packet that had the same number on it.

We were really busy!

We raised over $200 to send to Lonny.

When we added our total to the rest of the school, we had raised over $2,000.

We were very proud that we had helped out Lonny and her village in Malawi.

Trip to tip top

Yesterday, Room 4 went to Tip Top to see the factory and learn about packaging.

First we went on the bus. Then we went up the stairs to the factory. Next we were looking at the ice cream. After that we went home.

Yesterday we went to Tip Top and we had an ice cream We were watching a movie about Tip Top and it was fun.

We went on the bus. I felt happy because the ice cream was very yum!

Halloween Poems

We have been learning about poetic writing. Poems are when you make patterns with words. Mrs S read us a story called "My New Neighbours." it was about when a little boy moved into a new house and the neighbours who live in a castle behind the house come to welcome the boy to the community.

There was a monster, witch, Dracula, ghost and werewolf.

We looked at the pictures of them and wrote down all the different ways we could describe the visitors. After that we thought of some other things that we could compare them to.

when you do this you write a simile.

His hair was as green as grass.

Her face was as white as snow.

His fingers were as pointy as knives.

His hair was as black as midnight.

Her nose was as long as a truck.

He was as tall as the sky tower.

These are some of the similes we made up. We all wrote about different characters and published the poems. Then we decorated our sheets and Mrs S put them up outside our classroom.

In Term four many of the students went to a marae to learn tikanga and the protocols of visiting and sleeping at a marae.

We had a lot of fun and learnt even more. What a wonderful time!

We have been learning how to animate using the computer. By the end of the term we hope to be using props to animate with. Have a look at this Faith Louise and Santana made a great picture animation today.

Technology- Creating a habitat for a living thing.

In Science this term we have been learning about living things and what they need to survive.

The teachers gave us a Technology challenge.

We had to choose a living thing, plan and then create a habitat for it, remembering all the things we had learnt.

We had to think about MRS GREN:

MOVEMENT- having the right space so our living thing can move.

RESPIRATION- making sure it had air to breathe.

SENSES- having the right space so the living thingl can use it's senses.

GROWTH- having enough space so it can grow.

REPRODUCTION- having a space so it can have babies safely.

EXCRETION- making sure it can go to the toilet and thinking about how the waste can be gotten rid of safely.

NUTRITION- making sure it had the right food to eat.

When you look at our habitats, we hope you can see how much thought and effort we put in to creating them.

Our family celebration afternoon

We invited our Mum's, Dad's and family to our celebration afternoon.

We showed them the dance that we made up with Mrs Pritchard.

We were all different types of sea creatures swimming and moving around the seaweed.

Ronald McDonald comes to Randwick Park school.

We were excited!

Ronald McDonald was coming to our school to help us learn about keeping safe on the road. We waited in the hall for him to come........ but, oh, oh! ....

Where was he?????

Was he lost in the rain? Did he forget where Randwick park school was?

Did he stop off for a burger?

We waited and waited. Mrs S, Miss Johnson and the other teachers entertained us with songs until finally, a very late Ronald came to the hall.

Hooray! the show could begin.

We learnt about:

putting our seatbelts on before our parents start the car.
to walk on the footpath closer to the grass to keep away from the dangerous road.
to look up driveways before we go across them.
to use the pedestrian crossing to cross the road.
to hold our adults hand when we cross.
to listen to the crossing guards and do what they say.

The show begins!

We had to wait quietly backstage until it was out turn to go on.

It was great fun.

As soon as the music started we remembered our moves and go into it.

The lights shone in our eyes but we could see the audience behind them.

All our shirts glowed like the moon!

The people all gave us a really big clap when we finished.

I think I want to do it again next time!

Cannibal King 2 Production

Wow! it is time for the school production.

We have been practicing our dance every day for the last two weeks and now it is time for us to get ready.

There was a lot to do!

We all were very excited. Today was the day that we were going to go on stage and dance in the Cannibal King 2 (CK2)show.

Everyone had been very busy making our lei or ula's. We cut out slower shaped pieces of many different colours. We then cut up some coloured straws too.

We all had to decide on what pattern we were going to use to make our design. some people used just two colours and others used many, many colours.

We had to thread the flower shapes and the straws onto a thread. it was lots of fun!

Once we had finished we tied them off and then we got changed into our lavalava's.

They were all bright colours and had amazing designs. we wore white shirts so that when we were on stage the blacklight would make us shine in the dark.

We were really lucky that some of our Mum's stayed with us and helped us get ready for the show.

It was very exciting in the classroom waiting to be called by the big kids to get ready to go on stage.

Some of us had "butterflies' in our stomachs.

We thought we all looked pretty awesome!

Our Kelly Tarlton's Artwork

When we got back to school, we thought about all the living things we had seen at Kelly Tarlton's. There were fish, sharks, rays, penguins, pirannahs, crayfish, seahorses, crabs, snapper and so much more. We thought about what each of the animals needed to survive and where they lived in the sea. This is called their 'habitat'. We all chose one of the creatures to write a report about and we shared them with our class.

For art, we painted our creature using a flat block technique and then used pastels on top to create details like scales and fins on the fish. When we finished, we all drew a picture of ourselves too.

Mrs S and Mrs Paul then made a mural of the Kelly Tarlton's tunnel. We stapled our sea creatures in the water and our faces safely inside the tunnel area.

We think it looks pretty awesome.

We hope you like it too!!

Lunch at the park finished our exciting day out. the playground was really cool!!

ICT - Kidspiration Shark

Today in ICT we looked at the shark and talked about what it eats, where it lives and its special parts.

We then used Kidspiration to draw a shark and then the bubbles to add in sub headings and then information under the sub headings.

Mrs S brought 2 medals to show us. We all got to hold them and have a look. The brown medal was really heavy.

Mrs S's uncle went to war too. He went to WWII (1945) and to fight in Korea in 1957. He was in the army too. His uniform is different from his Dad's. It looks more comfortable. He helped saved some soldiers and was given 2 medals like his Dad

This is a photo of Mrs S's Grandfather. He went to fight in WWI. His friends went off to England and he wanted to join them. He was only 16 and too young to join the army. He pretended he was older and went off in 1917.

This is the certificate he got for going to the great War (WWI). He went for 2 years. He got two medals.

ANZAC Day

This week we have been learning about ANZAC day. We read a story about a boy and his Grandad. The Grandad went to the ANZAC parade every year. When he came home he was always sad and grumpy. He missed his friends who had died in the war. The Grandad always had a cup of tea and an ANZAC biscuit.

In class we made some ANZAC biscuits. They were YUM!!!!!!

After our trip to the Marae we used Kid Pix to draw what we had learnt. We also added some text using the text box.

Learning our Dance.

Mrs Pritchard has been teaching us a dance. We are learning to know which is our right and left sides. We practice every week on Fridays. On the last day of school, we are going to share our dance with our families.

What makes us special?

In class we talked about what made each of us special. We wrote or drew pictures of those things onto paper that was shaped like the petals of a flower. Zaine took photos of us all and we printed them off. We collected them from the printer. Everyone cut out their photo and glued it into the middle of their flower. We put them all together on the back wall of our class. It looks like a big vase of flowers.

We went on the bus to the sky tower. We had lunch at the park and played on the playground. It was fun there.

Mr Brent took us down lots of stairs to the refuge room. It was made of concrete and steel. We got tired walking down all the stairs. Mr Brent told us this is where people go if there is a fire or something. After he showed us all the things there, we went down in the lift. Mr Brent had to put a special key in the lift to get it to stop and pick us up. The lift went down really fast!

We got out at the top. There were windows everywhere. The sky tower had windows in the floor too. We all laid down on them.
You could see a swimming pool. A man was swimming in the pool. He looked tiny.

Then we got back in the bus and went to the Sky tower.
It was cool there. We went up the in the lift. It went up very fast. You could look down at the floor and see the ground.
